Abstract

In today's global and digitalized world, the investigation of relational trust as part of social connections has remained a popular and interdisciplinary academic topic. This book explores the idea of trust as a basic type of information processing that might be as old as human existence but has gained new attention with the emergence of online communication channels. The result is a strategic reconsideration of the brain's role in the formation of social relationships and a new look at how information might shape our confidence in others.

Abstract

Maintaining interpersonal relationships is essential for individuals to achieve successful human social interactions and healthy human development. As such, this book adds to our knowledge about how to develop interpersonal relationships wisely and strategically among individuals of different roles in a variety of dyadic relationships. The book addresses intriguing issues that reflect novel developments and relevant challenges in the field of interpersonal relationships, especially via works conducted with the dyadic approach to interpersonal synchrony and interpersonal divergence. It characterizes how the dyadic relationship is a crucial factor in successful healthcare treatment in clinical settings, gives an overview of how the dyadic approach reveals the role of interdependence between individuals within educational and counseling pairs, and demonstrates how the quality of interpersonal relationships contributes to organizational citizenship behaviors in organizational and management settings.

Abstract

As kids we were told to avoid talking about politics in polite company. However, the conventional wisdom no longer applies: we need to find a way to talk to each other about American politics, even with those (and especially those) with whom we disagree. While we've hashed and re-hashed bitter political disagreements, we have paid less attention to concrete, actionable ways to better understand each other. While it's true that, on average, public opinion doesn't change quickly, it does change: a prime example is how people think and feel about LGBTQ rights, which saw a meteoric change over the last few decades. Drawing on diverse areas of social research, this book identifies and explains where conversations fail and how we can start to dig out of our opinion silos to make reasonable changes in everyday, interpersonal political conversations.

Abstract

“It is commonplace that social interaction is complex. This volume is the first to systematically explore sources and orders of this complexity in various interactional settings. It shows how technical mediation, multiactivity, the presence of several parties, the wealth of multimodal resources, and multi-sensorial perceptions create complicated and fragile constellations and processes in social encounters. In addition to fine-grained in-depth analyses of video recordings, the authors establish complexity as a theoretical lens that allows us to gain unprecedented insights into the fabrics of intersubjectivity and interactional organization in our current societies.” —Arnulf Deppermann, Professor, Leibniz Institute for the German Language, University of Mannheim Everyday social life is deeply tied to the ways in which people talk, interact, and engage in joint activities with each other. This book examines language use and social interaction through the lens of complexity, focusing on how participants establish and maintain shared understanding in multi-layered situations and settings. This book will find readership among students and scholars who use video-based methods and are interested in interaction, intersubjectivity and multimodality. Pentti Haddington is Professor of English language and interaction at the University of Oulu, Finland. Tiina Eilittä is a doctoral researcher at the University of Oulu, Finland. Antti Kamunen is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Oulu, Finland. Laura Kohonen-Aho is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Oulu, Finland. Iira Rautiainen is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Oulu, Finland. Anna Vatanen is a researcher at the University of Helsinki, Finland, and also affiliated with the University of Oulu, Finland. The editors form a team that has worked together on complexity of interaction for several years in the projects iTask: Linguistic and embodied features of interactional multitasking and PeaceTalk: Talk and interaction in multinational crisis management training funded by the Academy of Finland and Eudaimonia Institute at the University of Oulu, Finland.

Abstract

"This collection elaborates an innovative analytical framework for knowledge communication, bringing together insights from a range of professional settings to highlight how a cross-disciplinary approach can promote a new view of knowledge that emphasizes constructivist and cognitivist perspectives. The volume seeks to draw connections between different disciplines' traditionally disparate studies of knowledge communication, defined here as the communication of domain knowledge between experts of the same discipline, experts of different disciplines, or non-experts with an interest in developing expert knowledge. Featuring work from scholars across linguistics, corporate communication, and sociology on diverse professional environments, chapters focus on one of three central aspects in the communication of expert knowledge: the textual carrier of the interaction, the roles and relationships between parties in these interactions, and the contexts in which the texts and communication occur. Taken together, the collection elucidates the value of an approach that supposes that expertise is co-created in interaction under the conditions of human cognitive systems, and that knowledge asymmetries can offer both challenges and opportunities to better understand and generate new forms of communication and specialized knowledge. This book will be of interest to scholars interested in language and communication, professional communication, organizational communication, and sociology of knowledge"--
